Secrets to Staying Young Revealed Today, Right Here, Before Your Very Near Sighted Eyes!!

One of the secrets to staying young is to get enough sleep. Well, I'm going on 100 yrs old today as I woke up at 4:30 a.m., after a weird dream, then realized Michael left the garden water on ALL night long AGAIN, so I ran out in the dark of morning to shut it off. Sad to say, our neighbors don't even thank us for watering their lawns and driveways...what's with that?Since we were talking about how using our brain can help keep us young, I decided to do some research on what other things make people stay young or get younger, so, if you click on the clickable parts of these next four excerpts for different web sites, you can get more information and, if you use your fingers and your toes to click, you will start getting younger faster (just ask Rebecca who commented on this in yesterday's post.)
Keeping Young with Wine

"A group of scientists at the University of Wisconsin at Madison says there is a new reason to toast to the benefits of red wine.
Scientists have long thought a natural compound called resveratrol, which is found in some red wines, could help slow the aging process by helping to protect tissues inside the body. The question has been whether just a glass or two of wine could really make a difference.
The Wisconsin researchers announced today that it doesn't take as much red wine as many researchers had previously thought.
And at wine bars in New York City, they were already fielding calls.

In previous studies, mice had been given the equivalent of what they would have gotten from 100 bottles of wine a day.
But that's what is different with the findings in the Wisconsin study released today. The researchers used much lower levels on their mice and still had positive results.
"The precise number of glasses of wine or bottles of wine are difficult to predict," said Wisconsin-Madison professor Richard Weindruch, the author of the study.
As the research continues, some scientists are already popping corks, wondering if it is possible to put resveratrol in a pill."
(And, even if the wine DOESN'T work...enough of it and you won't care! Either that, or when you look in the mirror things will be looking pretty darn good!)

Farming and living off the land can keep you young

"There's over a hundred head of cattle here. This is what Kelly Berry has done all of his life, except for a stint in the service. At age 72, he figured he slow down a bit, but hasn't figured out how.
"I guess that's what keeps you young. Keep busy," Berry said."

(Yes sirree, folks, just go out and buy a 100 head of cattle and youth will be yours! Or you could volunteer to help someone with a 100 head of cattle...think there must be some magic formula where it HAS to be at least 100!)

"The floor was filled with the young wedding party, beginning to let loose to the music and encouraging everyone on the sidelines to join in, singles, children,and oldsters.
The next two hours was the most energetic fitness class in formal and dress-up attire I have ever seen.
The exciting thing to watch was the oldies, shyly watching for a while, wiggling to the beat. Before long all the guests were dancing, sweating up a storm, the young encouraging the oldsters, and what fun everyone had.
No one had a heart attack and all were sad when the last dance was called, as they were having so much fun.
Fun is the operative word here and it is a great recommendation for me to share in my column.
You can stay fit by hanging with young folks and you need to keep on dancing! "

(There is also the possibility that this will work to not age you because it could possibly kill you, so there you go, no more aging!)

"At the top of this list is an abundance of fruits and vegetables. The Seventh-Day Adventist Religious denomination adheres to a vegetarian diet that emphasizes fruits, vegetables, nuts, and whole grains (note: all high in antioxidants). This group is known for it's longevity and typically those adhering to this way of life live four to seven years longer compared to those eating more omnivorous diets. People who eat at least five servings daily of fruits and vegetables cut their risk for heart disease and certain cancers. They also reap the benefit of all the antioxidant vitamins that these foods can provide. Blueberries, especially, can prevent oxidative damage, and are an especially wonderful superfood. Tomatoes are also right up there.Fish, especially those deep, cold water swimmers can also keep you looking young. It's those extraordinary omega-3 fats found in these fish that help prevent against heart disease, are naturally anti-inflammatory and really help your skin look radiant. Check www.OceansAlive.org for the latest information on safe seafood.

Along the same line, nuts are not only a great source of healthy fats, but also antioxidants, fiber, vitamins and minerals. Nuts have gotten such a bad reputation in the past for their fat content, but they're making a serious comeback and it's one bandwagon you won't want to miss. Just watch your portions when it comes to nuts. A quarter of a cup will do you well.Yogurt is another superfood due to its calcium and probiotic (good bacteria) content. Probiotics help keep our gut in check, literally, by maintaining good intestinal health. Good intestinal health contributes to a healthy immune system, overall wellness and good digestion. Calcium is also important for our aging bones. Just be sure to check the sugar content of your favorite yogurt – they can be loaded with sugar and/or artificial sweeteners. Your best bet is to go with plain yogurt and add your own fresh fruit.

And once again, we have our Mediterranean friends to thank for introducing us to their ways, which really appear to help keep us young. Olive oil, red wine and garlic, three Mediterranean staples, are all powerful anti-aging foods. Olive oil contains naturally occurring antioxidants and polyphenols in addition to monounsaturated fat that is actually good for us. Red wine (one glass a day), contains resveratrol, which may help protect against heart disease, age-related dementia (memory loss) and diabetes. Garlic has been linked to many health benefits including heart health and immunity."
(Added benefit is if you don't like several of these foods and you eat them anyway, it will seem like you are living forever and not aging!)

SOME THINGS TO SMILE ABOUT AND MAKE YOU YOUNG...

"The secret of staying young is to live honestly, eat slowly, and lie about your age."

**************
The biggest loser at my weight-loss club was an elderly woman. "How'd you do it?" we asked. "Easy," she said. "Every night I take my teeth out at six o'clock."

****************
Even at age 88, my mother was vain about her looks. At a party, an old friend exclaimed, "Edith, you haven't changed in 20 years." "Oh," said Mom, horrified. "I hope I didn't look like this 20 years ago."

*****************
Visiting his parents' retirement village in Florida, my middle-aged friend, Tim, went for a swim in the community pool while his elderly father took a walk. Tim struck up a conversation with the only other person in the pool, a five-year-old boy. After a while, Tim's father returned from his walk and called out, "I'm ready to leave."Tim then turned to his new friend and announced that he had to leave because his father was calling. Astonished, the wide-eyed little boy cried, "You're a kid?"

*************************

I was having lunch with my daughter Rachel, who's three, at our local mall and was feeling particularly macho for a 46-year-old. All morning, women had been smiling at me and giving me the eye.Getting up to leave the table, I ran my fingers through my hair—and discovered two yellow-ducky barrettes that had been lovingly placed there hours before.

****************************

One of my fourth graders asked my teacher's assistant, "How old are you, Mrs. Glass?" "You should never ask an adult's age," I broke in. "That's okay," Harriett said smiling. "I'm fifty.""Wow, you don't look that old," the boy said. I was breathing a sigh of relief when another child chimed in, "Parts of her do."

~~~Thank You Lord for the blessing of keeping us young through prayer and giving to others...even if it's only a warm smile or a kind word.
  1. Love the Mall joke. Reminded me of Jimmy when he was about 20. He offered to watch his nearly year old niece of his sister so she could get some rest. He took Kellie to the Mall. He said, "Watching Kellie was a great chick draw. They all think I'm a great uncle." MEN!!! [laughing out LOUD] HEHEHEHE! Cathy
  2. I agree with Cathy, my son said the same thing about taking Jayden out with him! Ugh!
    Okay, does it have to be red wine? I get a headache from red wine. I prefer Pino Grigio.
    The dancing, I love that idea! And even if you drop dead dancing up a storm, what a nice way to go out!
    Olive oil and garlic! I'm there!
    But the whole idea of living longer, I don't just want to live longer, I want to live 'happily ever after' longer! Are these studies promising a HEALTHY longer life? Or just a longer life? You know I question everything, Marcy!
    I liked the classroom joke best! Reminded me of my Kindergarten kids!
    Nice post, Marcy!
    And for me, coming here each day is one of the ways that helps to keep me young!
    Love you,
    Eileen
  5. Marcy every one of your jokes did their job and made me laugh...
    I honestly started following the Med. Diet and all the above 15 years ago...and the joke about teeth out at 6:00, well I try not to eat after 6:00 (I feel and sleep better doing so)...it all started after a serious bout with pneumonia...
    "Eat healthy and think positive thoughts" I believe you ARE what you "eat and think"... physically and mentally...so come to Marcy's place for good advice and laughs!
    Smiles to you Marcy!
