Dogs (and cats etc.) are Friends

Tinkabelle is not this big and Buddy is not this little, but I just had to give you a picture!

There will be pictures of Buddy and Tinkabelle added today (so check back later...okay, the pictures are here now) as I am planning on taking Tinka along for the ride (which ought to create mass chaos in my van...say a little prayer here, please). Not being totally insane, I am taking Kelly along to 'ride shotgun'!!

Here is Tinkabelle nuzzling Buddy before going into the van (Does it look like he's saying "Oh no"?:

This morning I am doing a favor for my neighbor and taking her little boston terrier to be groomed (with his little body and short hair, I keep on wondering WHAT they are going to groom?) Anyway, his name is Buddy and he is our Tinkabelle's BEST friend in the whole world. She and Buddy have 'playdates', which translates into: I have his owner's key and go get him to play with Tinka while Joan is at work. The good news is that Tinka is ecstatic and loves Buddy waaaaaaaaaay more than he loves her (everyone has commented on this) , but MOST importantly, Tinkabelle doesn't give a flip about this inequity!! She will urge him on by flipping up his bottom (hilarious to us but probably not as funny to Buddy) and most often flanking him and barking at him. He gets tired and Tinka never seems to get tired. I can see, by the look in his eyes, that he is saying "Somebody PLEASE make her stop."
Things went pretty well, no wild shenanigans in the van, (oh, the awesome power of prayer), just Tinka mystified at Buddy being in there with her:
Tinka whispers in buddy's ear "It really is you, Buddy! Can I nibble on your ear, leg, etc. or just slobber you up a little for the groomer?":

This is like an Aesop's fable (hope he's not rolling over in his grave) because there are morals and lessons in this story:

First: Love like crazy

Next: Flip your loved one up by their bottom

Then: Love back sweetly even when he/she growls at you

Still: Don't count the cost or measure the love

Remember to: Never hold a grudge (Tinka doesn't care HOW much he ignores or tries to get away from her)

Always: Whine and cry like someone is skinning you alive when he/she has to go back home (I have truly worried that the neighbors will call the Anti Cruelty Society on us)

Don't forget to: Greet affectionately and slobber all over the place with glee

Last: Love like crazy

Most vital to Michael and Kelly and me is that TinkaBelle has taught, and continues to teach us that she is also a little instrument of God by being a small but effective generator of unconditional love. Please show extra love to someone and some of God's creatures today.

Todays snickers:

Gone to the Dogs

There was this man who had a dog. He came home one day, and his dog was looking and acting like he felt really bad.

He wasn't sure what was wrong so he took it to the vet. He told the vet of his problem, and the vet said that there was a sure-fire way to see if the dog is sick.

He left the room and returned with a cat. He rubbed the cat in the dogs face, and after a while came to the conclusion that the dog was indeed feeling poorly.

The man was upset, but given medecine to make his dog all better.

He asked the doctor how much he owed him. The doctor said, "$550"

The man was stunned. He asked the doctor to explain and the doctor said, "Fifty for the medicine and visit, and $500 for the cat-scan..."

Finally, I leave you with an adorable picture. Pictures rarely make me laugh hard, but this one made me laugh out loud (even Michael said "what's so funny?") Can you tell who's boss?

~~~For the blessings of giving us your loving creatures and may we learn good things from them, I thank you Lord.
Take Time on Thursday to Turn to the Lord
It's National Prayer Day and I found some really neat pictures for it. This one below is of a church where flags from many countries are being shown and all these people prayed together!! Here is a reminder of the potency of your prayers and mine...remember God and you/me make a majority!
How's this for a sweet picture of women taking time to meet and pray before going to work/shopping etc.?
Here we have a prayer group in a yoga class.
I just love to see a game preceded by prayer, so "Facing The Giants" is a great film to watch.
I don't know where this is located, but wouldn't it be nice to see these everywhere, like even all over the earth?? Guess we have to just keep this sign in our hearts:
How beautiful to see the words "vigilance of prayer" for we need to be careful and watchful and constant in little prayers and big prayers. Let's challenge ourselves to not only pray today, but pray more every day. One way that I have started long ago to pray more is whenever I hurt myself (don't ask...even today I stubbed the living daylights out of my small toe on an immovable object) I say "Santa Maria" with a bit of pain in my voice (this used to tickle the stew out of my son) and then I finish it off by saying "madre de
Dios, ruega por nosotros pecadores ahora y en la hora de nuestra muerte. Amen" which translates, from Spanish, into "Holy Mary, mother of God pray for us sinners now and at the hour of our death. Amen". Guess I should let you know that my late hubby and I used to speak Spanish (and would even pray together at night in Spanish) to each other (he was raised in Venezuela). Isn't that so much better than my old 'leftover', "puke"???
Because this is such a special day, I am taking the liberty of adding comments at the end of these prayer jokes:
Give Thanks
A 4-year-old boy was asked to say grace before Christmas dinner. The family bowed their heads in expectation. He began his prayer, thanking God for all his friends, carefully naming them one by one. Then he thanked God for Mommy, Daddy, brother, sister, Grandma, Grandpa, and all his aunts and uncles. Then he began to thank God for the food. He gave thanks for the turkey, the dressing, the fruit salad, the cranberry sauce, the pies, the cakes, even the whipped cream.
Then he paused, and everyone waited--and waited. After a long silence, the young fellow looked up at his mother and asked, "If I thank God for the asparagus, won't he know that I'm lying?"
Even when we may not be too crazy about something, it can still be a blessing, so thank God anyway...that goes for you too, Michael, you asparagus hater!
True Commitment
A journalist was assigned to the Jerusalem bureau of his newspaper. He gets an apartment overlooking the Wailing Wall. After several weeks he realizes that whenever he looks at the wall he sees an old Jewish man praying vigorously.
The journalist wondered whether there was a publishable story here. He goes down to the wall, introduces himself and says: "You come every day to the wall. What are you praying for?"
The old man replies: "What am I praying for? In the morning I pray for world peace, then I pray for the brotherhood of man. I go home, have a glass of tea, and I come back to the wall to pray for the eradication of illness and disease from the earth."
The journalist is taken by the old man's sincerity and persistence. "You mean you have been coming to the wall to pray every day for these things?"
The old man nods.
"How long have you been coming to the wall to pray for these things?"
The old man becomes reflective and then replies: "How long? Maybe twenty, twenty-five years."
The amazed journalist finally asks: "How does it feel to come and pray every day for over 20 years for these things?"
"How does it feel?" the old man replies. "It feels like I'm talking to a wall."
In so many ways this is sweet and cute...we can feel, at times, like we are talking to a wall, but God is always there and we need to be still and let Him work in us and through us...the Old Testament speaks of the prophet looking for God in the thunder and the fire and all majestic things and he fails to find Him, then the prophet is silent and hears God in the whisper of the wind!
~~~~Thank you Heavenly Father for the blessing of being able to talk to You and thank You and praise You and ask for Your help.

Food and Food for Thought

It's time for another recipe, so this blog site can hopefully feed both body and soul. Now the above picture is snagged from the Internet and the closest I could find to my own blueberry crumb cake, just imagine it with more crumb topping and a little taller. I will try to remember to take a picture of it before it's all gone and I made it late last night!

Healthy Blueberry Crumb Cake
1 1/2 cups unbleached flour
1/2 cup oatmeal, ground
2-3 Tbsp milled flax
2 1/2 Tbsp sugar
2 1/2 tsp baking powder
Put above ingredients in a bowl and just mix together with a fork and make a well in the middle.
1 lg egg, beaten
3/4 cup milk
1/3 cup sugar
1/3 cup shortening (I use healthy sunflower oil)
1 cup blueberries (stir in LAST)
Mix the above ingredients together and pour into the well of dry ingredients and stir just till moistened (for some reason, this is one time lumps are a good thing).
Yummy topping (you could skip this, but it's sooooooo good):
1/2 cup (stick) real butter
1/2 cup brown sugar
1 cup flour
2 Tbsp milled flax (remember this should be easy to find in your regular grocery store)
1/2 cup oatmeal, ground up in a blender
Mix this together and it should look kind of crumby/ lumpy.
Pour your batter into a greased (I use the wrapper from the stick of butter) loaf pan, then sprinkle topping evenly (should be lots if you don't eat any of it...hmmm, wonder what made me say that?) Last, but not least, say a little prayer of love into the mix.
Cook at 375 (convection oven)-400 for 30-35 minutes (topping should be lightly browned).
Found the picture below on the Internet and my answer would be: Guess it's time to stop using THESE recipes.
Being a lover of puzzles, crosswords and mysteries, I do realize this means to break and separate the three eggs into two bowls but this seems like a case of somebody with too much time on their hands and I prefer not to have to spend extra time trying to "crack the code" when I'm baking. Life has enough challenges.

Speaking of challenges, here below are some difficult to answer questions:

Why is it called a "building" when it is already built?

Why do they call them "apartments" when they are all stuck together?

Why is there an expiration date on SOUR cream?

If you keep trying to prove Murphy's Law, will something keep going wrong?

Why does flammable and inflammable mean the same thing?

How can someone "draw a blank"?

Shouldn't there be a shorter word for "monosyllabic"?

Why is the word "abbreviate" so long?

Why did kamikaze pilots wear helmets?

What is another word for "thesaurus"?

These questions make me realize that we should probably award some sort of medal to anyone who has to learn English!

Had to do two jokes today, simply because I love the last one and can so easily imagine the little old lady and her astonishment!

Bats in your Belfry

Three Pastors in the south were having lunch in a diner. One of them said, "You know, since summer started I've been having trouble with them flying bats in my loft and attic at church. I've tried everything, but nothing seems to scare them off.
Another pastor said "Yes, me too. I've got hundreds living in my belfry and in the narthex attic. I've even had the place fumigated, and they won't go away!"
The third pastor said you just have to use the right approach to the problem, "I baptized all mine, made them members of the church, gave them offertory envelopes and we haven't seen one back since!"

An airline pilot wrote that on this particular flight he had hammered his ship into the runway really hard. The airline had a policy which required the first officer to stand at the door while the passengers exited, give a smile, and a "Thanks for flying XYZ airline." He said that in light of his bad landing, he had a hard time looking the passengers in the eye, thinking that someone would have a smart comment. Finally everyone had gotten off except for this little old lady walking with a cane.

She said, "Sonny, mind if I ask you a question?" "Why no Ma'am," said the pilot, "What is it?" The little old lady said, "Did we land or were we shot down?"
~~~Thank you dear God for the blessings You give us for our bodies and souls.
Leftovers vs Potty Mouth
Okay, I would just like to share a few words on "potty mouth"...that's what I'd like to do but being verbose, it will probably get out of hand. Speaking of verbose (I'm slightly off track already), I just want you to know that I don't purposely use "big" words, I was just an only child with a marvelous mom who had a great vocabulary as well as a photographic memory. No, sad to say, I only got the photographic, not the memory so that means I can take great pictures but not remember squat.
Now, back to 'potty mouth'...my parents didn't use bad language around me, although outside sources were not so inhibited. Since I didn't like what I heard, I decided, as a teenager that, if those words didn't exist, what would I say? Leftovers! Yes, whatever was leftover would be mine to use (and you thought this just applied to those things growing into scary life forms in the back of our refrigerators).
Here comes a little story about this. My 'leftovers' might not have always been ideal, sad to say. To give some background first, to this tale of woe, let me say that my mom always mentioned that she was too easily influenced by the people she was around. There was one lady at work who used a bad word rather consistently and my mom was horrified to hear herself use it, so she avoided being around that woman, but it would have been a major challenge to avoid me. My choice of a bad word substitute was puke. Not too pretty, huh? Unfortunately, I also used it frequently, with my dismayed mother saying "Do you have to use that word? I just hate the sound of it."
Now my mom had this group of ladies she met with once every two or three months, a nice group of women who liked to get out and go somewhere nice together. They would all dress up and even wear white gloves. This time they chose to go to a dinner/theater where everything is ultra formal. Halfway through the meal, my mother spilled some water and yelled "Oh puke"...the other ladies were aghast, shocked and otherwise horrified, but my mother was the most appalled of all of them (boy did I get an earful the next day and learned to really cut back on saying that word).
Remember, only YOU can stop potty mouth (actually have done this even where I worked by just wincing and saying...whew, I sure don't like hearing that language.) Now just picture the below picture being in your mouth if you do say these things:
Okay, now it's time to be Tickled on Tuesday:
As a senior citizen was driving down the freeway, his car phone rang. Answering, he heard his wife's voice urgently warning him, "Herman, I just heard on the news that there's a car going the wrong way on Highway 401. Please be careful!"
"Darn," said Herman, "It's not just one car. It's hundreds of them!"
For those who like a little "corn" in their jokes:
A customer ordered some coffee in a café. The waiter arrived with the coffee. and placed it on the table. After a few moments, the customer called for the waiter.
'Waiter,' he said. 'There's dirt in my coffee!'
'That's not surprising, Sir,' replied the waiter. 'It was ground only half-an-hour ago.'
Of course, we must have a potty mouth joke too:
Dave's parrot was always using bad language, so he asked the vet how he could stop it. "Every time the bird swears, put it in the freezer for 15 seconds," advised the vet.
The next time the parrot uttered an expletive, Dave did as the vet said.
Then, feeling guilty, Dave opened the freezer.
Shivering, the parrot came out saying, "I'm sorry for all the bad language I've been using."
Dave was astounded at the sudden change.
Then the parrot said, "By the way, what did the chicken do?"
$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$
The local bar was so sure that its bartender was the strongest man around that they offered a standing $1000 bet.
The bartender would squeeze a lemon until all the juice ran into a glass, and hand the lemon to a patron. Anyone who could squeeze one more drop of juice out would win the money.
Many people had tried over time (weightlifters, longshoremen, etc.), but nobody could do it.
One day this scrawny little guy came in, wearing thick glasses and a polyester suit, and said in a tiny, squeaky voice, "I'd like to try the bet."
After the laughter had died down, the bartender said OK, grabbed a lemon, and squeezed away. Then he handed the wrinkled remains of the rind to the little man.
But the crowd's laughter turned to total silence as the man clenched his fist around the lemon and six drops fell into the glass.
As the crowd cheered, the bartender paid the $1000, and asked the little man, "What do you do for a living? Are you a lumberjack, a weightlifter, or what?"
The man replied, "I work for the IRS."
Better late than Never
Well, me, 'the great conservator 'of God's good earth, didn't post anything for "Earth Day", so here goes something! And really, isn't Earth Day every day?
My daughter-in-law Brande is the craftiest sweetheart and she could probably have come up with this little photographed idea below but it would have been ooh and aah worthy when she finished:
Now, here's where I excel in my earthiness...recycling via bins. In Arizona I was in hog heaven (now, what does that REALLY mean...that I like to wallow around in mud, squeal at decibels that would cause hearing loss or be rewarded, like the little piglets are, with oreo cookies...hmmm...get me on the right day and those all sound good!). The sanitation company there GIVES you two garbage bins, a dark green one for regular trash and a blue one to put recycle items in. The recycle item bin was always the fullest and you didn't even have to separate things, just put them in cleaned out or rinsed out.
Here in Georgia I am "on my own", so I have a garbage can for collecting aluminum cans and there WAS one for glass (so I use a large plastic garbage bag), but it now is used to catch shower water before the hot water comes through (this is then used for houseplants and any outdoor plants year round). When the collection gets big, it's off to the dump we go. By the way, Michael really knows how to turn on the charm and romance...shortly before or after we were married, he took me to show me the dump as a sight seeing event!!!
Lots of people use the below bin for paper:
Although our dump takes paper and we have recycled it there, now we save paper and boxes and use them for ground mulch. Those pictures you saw of the new red azalea and the flax flowers and the pink buttercups...all have red mulch on top but newspapers and torn up boxes underneath to keep the weeds from coming through.
This next collage shows a few great reasons to be earth friendly:
The last visual I leave with you is of the earth inside of a rain droplet...isn't that awesome? It immediately reminded me of a long, long ago commercial on television of a strong-looking, impassioned North American Indian male looking at our litter strewn highways and byways and this HUGE tear came rolling down his face (anyone remember this one?):
Ever after that, my children were carefully watched wherever we went and if anyone dropped a wrapper, big or small, on the ground, from Chicago to the Grand Canyon, they not only picked up their offending paper, but were required to pick up at least one or two other papers nearby. There are times when I just "let my hair down", go crazy and wild and pick up (discreetly, no band playing or shouting) papers in front of stores, churches etc.
Last, but certainly not least, today is my Jonathan's birthday, my oldest grandchild who brought and brings us so much joy! He is eight years old today...how did that happen, yet another reason to treasure this earth that we "borrow" from our grandchldren.
Here are some snickers (and I really like the chocolate ones too) for today:
GOOD RECYCLER: You fill up the recycle bin every week with cans, bottles, and jars.
NOT SO GOOD: You give the recycle bin to the kids to use as a toboggan.
GOOD RECYCLER: You take your used motor oil to the nearest recycling station or collection facility.
NOT SO GOOD: You avoid the used-oil problem by never changing your oil. You recycle engines instead.
GOOD RECYCLER: You recycle not only your newspapers but also your phone books, magazines, and cardboard boxes.
NOT SO GOOD: You leave your newspapers in the bathroom stall at work after you're done. Doesn't that count?
~~~Thank you Lord for the blessings of this good earth You gave us, may we be good stewards, so that the precious little ones we are also entrusted with, may have this beauty to enjoy.

The Grandmother of Jesus

How strange that I never really thought about the fact that Mary's mother, was the grandmother of Jesus...there is something so sweet about that. We can thank Bernie for today's post for she wrote in a comment that she had always felt close to St. Anne, so I did a little research and here is a statue (from Germany) of St. Anne and Mary as a young girl:

Here is a painting by Da Vinci of St. Anne with the Blessed Mother and toddler Jesus...you can see the love in the eyes of all three of them!:

Finally, here is a stained glass window from Cambridge of a very blond (not too likely, being of Jewish heritage) St. Anne and Mary as a little girl:

And here is a little information I gleaned off the Internet (which also said that Hannah would have been St. Anne's name in Hebrew):

"Even her name “Anne” signifies “gracious, loving” and typifies her sublime destiny. She too had been chosen by God from eternity, and to her, as to her daughter, Mary, may be applied the words: “The Lord possessed me in the beginning of His ways . . . I was set up from eternity.” (Prov. 8:22-23). God prepared St. Anne with magnificent gifts and graces. Of her may be said what St. Bernardine of Siena wrote of St. Joseph: “In the kingdom of grace the universal rule is: If God elects anyone for a special privilege and a sublime state, He bestows on that person all the gifts necessary for his state and adornment.” "
One last tidbit of information...the shrine of the Blessed Mother picture from yesterday's post is from Kilkenny, Ireland.
Today we will have three jokes and of course, we must have a grandmother or two:

Grandma is Like God

A grandson was visiting one day when he asked, "Grandma, do you know how you and God are alike?"
She mentally polished her halo while and asked, "No, how are we alike?"
You're both old," he replied.

Long Happy Life

A woman walked up to a little old man rocking in a chair on his porch. "I couldn't help noticing how happy you look,"she said. "What's your secret for a long happy life?"
"I smoke three packs of cigarettes a day," he said. "I also drink a case of whiskey a week, eat fatty foods, and never exercise."
"That's amazing,"the woman said. "How old are you?'
"I'll be twenty-six next month".

Hearing Problems

An elderly grandmother had serious hearing problems for a number of years. She went to the doctor and the doctor was able to have her fitted for a set of hearing aids that allowed the sweet woman to hear 100%.
The elderly lady went back in a month to the doctor and the doctor said, "Your hearing is perfect. Your family must be really pleased that you can hear again."
Grandma replied, "Oh, I haven't told my family yet. I just sit around and listen to the conversations. I've changed my will three times!"
~~~Thank you for the blessings and wisdom of any who are older than us, Lord, may we be open to learn good things from them.
M A Y is for M A R Y
The above picture is just a lovely statue I found of the Holy Mother that looks unusual.
This is a special month dedicated to the Blessed Mother and the above picture in our backyard shows a small way in which we honor Mary for being the mother of Our Saviour. As a mother, she is such a beautiful inspiration to mothers everywhere. We mothers treasure, care for and protect our little ones and never stop the "mother connection" even when they have their own children, yet the Blessed Mother had to give up her Son for us!! Now I have a little son in Heaven but I did not have to choose to "give him up" as this Holy Mother did. It would be wise for all of us to say extra special prayers this month to make love like hers more of a possibility in this strife torn world.
This lovely picture I found shows Mary cuddling Jesus...how sweet and tender, something we need to be to others.
This is an image I found of a shrine in Ireland that honors Mary...wish I could have seen it when we were in Ireland 20 yrs. ago!
This is a picture of a sorrowful and sad Blessed Mother. Let us all be willing to make this world so much better that Mary will always be smiling instead of sad because we aren't praying and spreading goodness in this world. We do make a difference...
"As inspiration for all of us to realize that EACH of us can do things to help improve our world, I’m sharing stories that prove ONE PERSON can make important differences. I’ve read that the current history books given to students have purposely been revised to talk about “movements” but leave out the names of the individual people whose actions began the “movements”. For example, Gandhi made peaceful protest and peaceful civil disobedience a valuable process of peaceful change. Susan B. Anthony rose to the challenge as a famous leader of the battle to obtain women’s right to vote in the U.S. The Illuminati owners of text book publishers do not want students to realize that important improvements can begin with ONE PERSON; this is why the text books have been rewritten to discuss movements and not individuals."
Keeping that thought, let me share with you an experiment I did with my sixth grade Sunday school class one Sunday. First, let me say that many of these kids were restless and not wanting to have "school" on the week-end, so creativity needed to be employed many times. That meant a lot of prayerful thought and planning on my part.
The religious education coordinator was kind of used to my unusual requests, so when I asked for a room that was super dark and had no windows, (she only twitched slightly) I was given the keys to the normally locked bathroom for the regular week day students (there were other bathrooms for the Sunday school kids, so no panic please).
It definitely was totally dark, pitch black actually! Each student had a candle and I had some borrowed matches. They giggled and loved the atmosphere as I was explaining how important each of them are to making the world a better place. They admitted that it was very dark and they could see absolutely nothing. I lit one single candle and we could see each other but there was still a lot of darkness, so i said to the nearest student, "Let me light your candle" and it got a little brighter and we kept on doing that until the whole room was without shadows. So I said that we also have the option of lighting other people 's candles or teaching them how important a contribution their candle can make. So, please "light your candle" and help others light theirs.
Today's little laugh needs to be a mother joke:
Name Those Twins
A pregnant woman from Washington, D.C. gets in a car accident and falls into a deep coma.
Asleep for nearly 6 months, when she wakes up she sees that she is no longer pregnant and frantically asks the doctor about her baby.
The doctor replies, "Ma'am you had twins! a boy and a girl.
Your brother from Maryland came in and named them."
The woman thinks to herself, "No, not my brother... he's an idiot!"
She asks the doctor, "Well, what's the girl's name?" Denise." "
Wow, that's not a bad name, I like it! What's the boy's name?" "Denephew. "
~~~~Heavenly Father, thank you for the blessing of giving us the Blessed of all mothers to show us how loving we should be.

And here is today's joke:

A Sure Bet

A strong young man at the construction site was bragging that he could outdo anyone in a feat of strength. He made a special case of making fun of Morris, one of the older workmen. After several minutes, Morris had enough.

"Why don't you put your money where your mouth is?" he said. "I will bet a week's wages that I can haul something in a wheelbarrow over to that outbuilding that you won't be able to wheel back."

"You're on, old man," the braggart replied. "It's a bet! Let's see what you got." Morris reached out and grabbed the wheelbarrow by the handles. Then, nodding to the young man, he said, "All right. Get in."

~~~How unworthy I am of your many blessings, Lord and I so thank You for I see You in these friends and that makes me a better me!
